Our Story
PlayNest Kids was born from a simple observation made by founder Rebecca Foster during a rainy weekend in 2018. As a mother of three energetic children and a former environmental educator, Rebecca noticed a growing disconnect between Australian children and the natural world. Indoor play spaces were either sterile and plastic-dominated, or outdoor parks were weather-dependent and often inaccessible during the country's harsh climate extremes.
Drawing on her background in childhood development and environmental science, Rebecca envisioned a revolutionary concept: an indoor playground that authentically recreated the sensory richness and developmental benefits of outdoor nature play. She partnered with landscape architect Michael Patel and wildlife educator Jessica Green to transform an abandoned warehouse in suburban Melbourne into Australia's first truly nature-inspired indoor play facility.
The initial design incorporated sustainable timber from responsibly managed forests, natural fiber ropes, and innovative lighting systems that mimicked natural daylight cycles. Interactive wildlife exhibits were developed in collaboration with local conservation organizations, ensuring educational accuracy while maintaining engagement for young learners. The signature treehouse zones were engineered to meet rigorous safety standards while preserving the adventurous spirit of climbing real trees.
Since opening our doors in 2019, PlayNest Kids has welcomed over fifteen thousand families, expanded to multiple locations across Australia, and become a recognized leader in nature-based childhood enrichment. Our commitment to combining ecological awareness, physical development, and imaginative play continues to guide every decision we make.
